Introduction to Photography Course
Will Barton Photography has teamed up with a good friend and full-time City & Guilds Photography Course tutor, Kay Goddard, to form Inspired Light Images our aim is to provide quality photography tuition to photographers of all levels.
Budding photographers who are just starting out would be well advised to enrol on a course to help them get the maximum enjoyment out of their photography. Learning to understand the basics of photography is very rewarding – Inspired Light Images have set up their Introduction to Photography Course, a 6 week evening course, plus 2 day practical tuition sessions.

Step 1: Camera set-up: familiarisation and picture composition
• Camera Set-up, understanding picture file quality & jpeg sizes.
• Camera mode dials & functions
• Understanding Camera Scene modes – what they are and what they do
• Learning basic composition & framing techniques
• Understanding how the camera focus modes work
• Downloading & storing digital images
Step 2: Understanding exposure; how to get a correctly exposed image
• Basic exposure: aperture & shutter speeds
• Camera metering modes
• Relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO
• Scene modes and impact on exposure
• Effective camera support – tripods
Step 3: Controlling subject movement; using shutter priority mode
• Obtaining sharp images; understanding camera shake?
• Freezing subject movement – Fast shutter speeds
• Showing subject movement – Slow shutter speeds
• Using creative exposure; when to use fast/slow shutter speeds
• Lens & Camera Image stabilisation (modern cameras/lenses only)
• Camera support – using monopods / tripods
Step 4: Depth of field explained; out of focus backgrounds; using aperture priority mode
• What is depth of field?
• Selective focussing, knowing where to focus.
• Using creative exposure to show shallow depth of field; how to blur the background
• How to keep everything in sharp focus using front-to-back sharpness
Step 5: Picture Composition
• How do people view images?
• Choice of viewpoint; what to leave out
• Framing and balanced image composition
• Using “rules” of composition
• Impact of lens choice; wide-angle, telephoto, standard lenses
Step 6: Putting all the steps together & introduction to camera white balance
• Camera white balance – a basic introduction
• Composition hints and tips; guidelines to think about
• Exposure re-cap; what camera mode to use; take control and be creative with exposure
